You are looking at an example of a dynamical tiling for a doubly periodic nonlinear map of the plane with a non-resonant rotation vector.
I discovered such tilings in the Fall of 1999 and their existence is shown in my preprint "Combinatorics of Torus Diffeomorphisms" avaliable from my preprint page.
