Devil’s Backbone Trail Conditions

As of July 7, 2012

Lena ran the entire 25 miles from Windy Pass to Hyalite.   The course was perfect for that time (though too much snow for event day). Expect snow every mile or so but almost none on the trail exept in Hyalite basin.   The saddle up to Hyalite is still snowcovered but you can scramble up on the right and it will be a great glissade down on the return. Pictures below.

Saturday weather predicted low of 39 in the morning, high of 75 in Bozeman with almost total overcast. Looks like lighening is unlikely but don't discount it entirely.   Be prepared to step off the ridge if it is close. Temps should be 10 degrees cooler on the course.

I will mention this at the race brief at 5:30 on Friday at our house, but even if it is hot you can expect cool temps in the morning and evening so bring a long-sleeved shirt and wind jacket minimum. Fast runners keep in mind that you can get injured or bonk enough to put you in with the walkers. Don't get caught up at 9500 feet with no extra clothing.

Headwall leading up to Hyalite Peak (will become clear on           Wood arrows after steep switchback up Grassy mountain (halfway)
the right by race day).
