Announcement: The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Montana State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics at the Assistant Professor level to begin in August 2008. Exceptional candidates will be considered for an appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level.

Requirements: Ph.D. degree in Mathematics or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications: Research interests of the candidate should mesh well with those of the department's mathematics and applied mathematics faculty. Applicants with experience in applied and computational mathematics are preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include research, teaching and service. An active research program is essential. Teaching load usually consists of one undergraduate and one graduate course each semester. A commitment to excellence in teaching is expected.

Qualities of a Successful Candidate: The successful candidate will be an independent researcher with strong commitment to quality teaching and will contribute to the Department's mission of providing outstanding research, teaching and service to the local, national and international communities. The successful candidate will have strong communication and interpersonal skills and will have the ability and desire to collaborate with students and faculty at Montana State University.

ABOUT MSU & BOZEMAN: The Department of Mathematical Sciences has a small but active faculty, with researchers in applied statistics, applied and computational mathematics, mathematical biology, and dynamical systems. The department offers an M.S. in Mathematics with options in mathematics and mathematics education; an M.S. in Statistics; an M.S. in Ecological and Environmental Statistics; a Ph.D. in Mathematics with emphases in mathematics and mathematics education; and a Ph.D. in Statistics. There will be 65 students in our graduate program during Fall 2007 with 32 Ph.D. students. Currently, research funding within the department is approximately $2,000,000 per year. The department has close ties with research groups in other departments across campus, including Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics, Biofilm Engineering, Center for Computational Biology.

Montana State University has an enrollment of 12,000 students. It is located in Bozeman, a town of 30,000 in the mountains of southwestern Montana. Outdoor activities such as downhill and cross country skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and trout fishing are within a few minutes of town, and Yellowstone National Park is only 90 miles away.
