ITEM 102-2001-R0199  RETIREMENT of Glenn Allinger, Department of Mathematical Sciences; Montana State University-Bozeman

  Approved unanimously at January 28, 1999 meeting in Helena.

THAT:  Upon the occasion of the retirement of Glenn D. Allinger from the faculty of Montana State University-Bozeman, the Board of Regents wishes to express its appreciation for his service to the University, the Montana University System, and the people of the State of Montana.

EXPLANATION:  Glenn D. Allinger received his Ph.D. from the University of Utah, and in 1972 joined the Montana State University faculty in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Since then he has dedicated twenty-six (26) years to the enhancement of Montana State University. Following his official retirement in August 1996, Dr. Allinger has continued his association with the Department of Mathematical Sciences as co-director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) project entitled "Systemic Initiative for Montana Mathematics and Science (SIMMS), Integrated Mathematics Project." He has taught a wide spectrum of mathematical courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, with a specialty in the area of pre-service and in-service teacher education. Dr. Allinger's outstanding teaching accomplishments have been recognized by the Bozeman Chamber of Commerce/MSU Alumni Association, Phi Sigma Alpha Chapter of Mortar Board, and the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He has published in a variety of mathematics education journals while also serving in capacities, such as sectional editor and referee for national mathematics publications. He has participated in essential leadership roles as co-director for $11.7 in NSF grants and as co-director and principalinvestigator for more than $283,000 in Dwight D. Eisenhower monies. His service includes membership on University and departmental committees and yearly presentations at state, regional, and national conferences. Dr. Allinger was an effective facilitator of collaborative activities between Montana Public Schools and the University system, including a term as President of the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

For these and other contributions, the Board of Regents of Higher Education is pleased to confer upon Glenn D. Allinger the rank of Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences at Montana State University and wishes him well for many pleasant years in the future.
