Optimizing a Function

The TI-92 has two prodcedures fMax and fMin that can be used to find the maximum or minimum of a function, respectively. It is often best to use these functions in approximate mode or to use green-diamond ENTER so that the search for a maximum or a minimum is numeric. For some, but not all, functions the TI-92 is able to find the exact answer algebraically.

The screen below illustrates a simple use of fMin.

Notice that the TI-92 produces the value of the variable x at which the function attains its minimum or maximum. To find the minimum or maximum value, evaluate the function f at this point as shown in the screen below.

This particular function has no maximum value. If you ask the TI-92 to find the maximum value it will answer infinity or -infinity. You can also ask the TI-92 to find the maximum (or minimum) of a function on an interval. The screen below illustrates these comments.
