Estimation and Limits -- Dividing Functions -- Answers

  1. We know from our work in the Check Your Understanding section of the module on Multiplying Functions that for the polynmials p(x) and q(x)

      Lim   p(x) = p(a)   and
    x --> a

      Lim   q(x) = q(a)
    x --> a

    From this section we know that

      Lim   r(x) =   Lim   p(x)/q(x)
    x --> a        x --> a

                 =   Lim   p(x) /  Lim  q(x)
                   x --> a       x --> a

                 =  p(a) / q(a)

                 =  r(a)

  2. Because one cannot divide by zero.

  3. The cheapest acceptable alternative is
