Estimation and Limits -- Introduction -- Stretch Your Understanding
- Joe's Crystal Clear Water Company sells spring water. The demand
for their water is so high that they have purchased 10,000,000 gallons of water
from another supplier. Unfortunately, the water
they bought was contaminated by Agent Icky. It contains 10 ppm of Agent Icky.
State regulations require that water cannot contain more than 2 ppm of Agent
Icky. Joe has decided to dilute the water he purchased with his own pure
water. How much pure water must he add to the contaminated water to meet state
regulations?

Joe's usual source contains only 2 ppm of Agent Icky and the label states
this fact. State regulations require that claims made in the label cannot be off
by more than 0.5 ppm. Joe has decided to dilute the water he purchased with water
from his usual source. How much water must he add to the contaminated water to meet
state regulations?
