Newton's Method -- TI-92

You may want to look at the TI-92 help modules on

The following screens illustrate how the TI-92 can be used to work with equations like

cos x - x = 0

It is often useful to begin by looking a a graph of the right hand side of an equation like this to get a rough idea of where its solutions are located.

In this case it looks like there is one solution and it is near the point x = 1, so we use that as our initial estimate. As usual, you may need to use the Green diamond-ENTER key to obtain a numerical estimate if the MODE on your TI-92 is set to AUTO or EXACT. The number of digits displayed depends on the Display Digits setting in your MODE screen.
