Classification Theorem for Nonlinear Continuous Dynamical Systems

Classification Theorem for Nonlinear Continuous Dynamical Systems

Suppose that p* is an equilibrium point for the continuous dynamical system

p' = f(p)

That is, suppose that f(p*) = 0.

Then if f'(p*) is negative the equilibrium point is attracting in the sense that if the initial condition is close enough to p* then p(t) will approach p*.
