Recording Sound with the TI-83/TI-CBL

The TI-CBL can record sound by making up to 512 air pressure readings at intervals ranging from 0.0001 to 0.2000 seconds. The TI-83 program sound below will set-up the TI-CBL for recording sound and then display 95 of the readings. As usual you can download this program using the TI-Graph Link program and cable, or from another TI-83 calculator, or as a last resort you can type it in.

Connect the Microphone to the CH1 port on the TI-CBL and the TI-CBL to the TI-83 using the linking cable. Make sure both units are on and then run the program sound in the usual way. You should see the screen below.

Enter a number between 0.0001 and 0.2. Usually 0.0001 works best unless you want to record a very low-pitched tone. If you enter a number below this range the TI-83 will use 0.0001 and if you enter a number above this range the TI-83 will use 0.2. The TI-83 should respond with the following screen telling you the number you have chosen.

The TI-83 and the TI-CBL are now ready to begin recording sound. Start the sound -- humming, playing a note on a musical instrument -- whatever sound you want to record. While the sound is playing press ENTER on the TI-83. You should see the following screen.

Almost immediately the word DONE should appear on the TI-CBL. Press ENTER on the TI-83 again. After a short pause the TI-83 will draw a graph like the one below showing the first 95 readings. All 512 readings are stored in the list L3 and can be used for further analysis.
