Graduate Program Assistantships
Graduate Teaching
Assistantships
The
Department of Mathematical Sciences awards approximately 65 Graduate
Teaching
Assistantships (GTAs) each year. The stipend for a GTA in 2007-2008
ranges from $15,150-$18,150 depending on qualifications. These totals
include an (optional) $1,900-$2,900 summer stipend of which
approximately
35 per year are awarded. GTAs receive full tuition waivers but must pay
miscellaneous fees each semester. Currently these fees amount to $759
per semester for health insurance (unless you can show that you have
other coverage) and approximatly $30 per credit hour for additional miscellaneous fees. GTAs teach one
college level class per semester, thereby broadening
their education while improving their marketablility. There are
a variety of courses (over 17) that GTAs may teach. This variety
provides a tremendous opportunity for students to develop teaching
breadth and skills that will increase their academic job opportunities.
We begin screening new applicants for GTA appointments on March 1 of
every year. More information on graduate assistantships is
also available through the MSU Division of Graduate Education
Graduate Assistantships page.
Graduate
Research Assistantships Some
Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs) are also available. Stipends
are most often the same as those for GTAs but in some cases may be
higher. GRAs work on research projects with faculty in the Department
of Mathematical Sciences and often with research scientists across
campus on interdisciplinary projects. Past GRA opportunities
have occurred through interdisciplinary projects associated with the
Center for Biofilm Engineering, the Center for Computational Biology,
the Mountain Research Center, and the Agricultural Experiment Station.
Applicants who are admitted to a graduate degree program in the
Department of Mathematical Sciences are automatically considered for
such research projects. When a separate application for such a GRA is
required, qualified students are notified. Fellowships
and Scholarships
University
and departmental scholarships and fellowships are also available.
The size of these awards varies widely. Applicants who are admitted
to a graduate degree program in the Department of Mathematical Sciences
are automatically considered for such awards without the need for
further paperwork. Financial
Aid Students
who are in need of additional financial support may apply for
institutional loans and work assistance by completing the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid. Application forms and information
regarding financial aid for graduate school may be obtained by
contacting the
Office of Financial Aid Services, MSU, Bozeman, MT 59717,
