Application Procedure and
Requirements
- Fill out the

- Wait for a reply. We
try to reply quickly, but sometimes it can take about a week. If
you haven't heard from us with ten days or have any questions
during the application procedure, email a query to
grad@math.montana.edu.
- After you have heard from us, apply
officially online through the Division of
Graduate Education website. There you can download an application
checklist and will be required to
- complete a Graduate
Studies Application Form (online and includes a Cumulative GPA
Calculation Form)
- pay a $50
application fee
- After reading the
Division of Graduate Education instructions in item 3 above, all
applicants will be directed to mail
- Official transcripts
from all Universities and Colleges you attended
- a minimum of 3
letters of recommendation
- Official GRE scores
(verbal, quantative, analytical - no subject exam)
- A short essay
describing your interests and aspirations

The
student should have a B (3.00 on 4.00 scale) average or better for
the last two years of undergraduate or graduate work. To achieve
regular admission status, we recommend:
- mathematics majors
complete an undergraduate advanced calculus sequence
- statistics majors
have two years of calculus and one year of statistics
- Mathematics
education majors should have one of the
following:

- a teaching
certificate with a mathematics endorsement
- two years K-12
teaching experience
- two years college
teaching experience
Graduate Record Examination
(GRE) and GTA Requirements.
All
applicants are required to take the
General Test of the GRE. The GRE subject exam is not
required. The applicant is encouraged to take the GRE by February
1. The minimum standards for a GTA, which can be relaxed at the
discretion of the department, is a GRE verbal score of 480. GTA
applicants from countries where English is not an official language
must also meet additional minimal
English Proficiency Requirements . These minimal acceptable
scores are:
- Test of English as a Foreign
Language-TOEFL: 550 (paper), 213(computer based), 80
(internet)
- International English Language
Testing System - IELTS: band score of 7.0
Only one of the TOEFL or IELTS
requirements need be met. If a paper or computer-based TOEFL exam
is taken, a minimum score of 50 is also required on a Test of
Spoken English- TSE exam (a requirement to be discontinued after
Fall 07).
