- A current position in high school teaching
- Two or more years of teaching experience
- An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher

- Certified secondary mathematics teachers not currently teaching but who intend to teach secondary mathematics in the near future
- Middle school teachers who hold secondary mathematics certification
Application Procedure
- All potential applicants are encouraged to complete a Preliminary Application for the Department of Mathematical Sciences. This allows the MSMME coordinator to pre-assess your qualifications and to advise you regarding specific application requirements. The pre-application can completed onilne by clicking here.
- Under our current system, all incoming MSMME teachers are assigned to an annual cohort (up to 12 new teachers per year). Teachers beginning the program in Fall or Spring are assigned to the upcoming summer cohort.
- Applications may be submitted throughout the year. Completed application files will be reviewed on November 1 for Spring 2013 startup and on March 1 for Summer 2013 startup. Both groups will be assigned to the Summer 2013 cohort. Applications received in the summer are reviewed on an as-needed basis and may be assigned to either the current or upcoming summer cohort. Summer file review can be expedited depending on the planned start date.
- Applications are first reviewed by the MSMME coordinator, who then presents the candidate to the mathematics education faculty for a collective admission decision. Accepted applications then proceed to the MSU Graduate School for formal admission. Upon admission, you will receive a letter of acceptance from the MSU Graduate School.
- We DO NOT require the GRE exam for this program. However, we do require a written personal statement for use in reviewing your potential as an MSMME teacher. In your statement, please summarize your educational and teaching history and current status, discuss your strengths and interests as a mathematics teacher, and describe your goals for completing a Masters Degree in Mathematics focused on secondary mathematics education.
- The application process also requires you to pay a fee, complete an information form, submit appropriate transcripts, and provide three letters of recommendation. You can find instructions for completing an application from the MSU Graduate School at http://www.montana.edu/wwwdg/apply.html This links you directly to the application requirements. Submit all application materials to the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the address given below. As soon as the first application item arrives in the Mathematical Sciences office (probably your MSU application form), the department will open a file for you. We will continue to add to the file until it is complete, at which time it begins a formal review process. Please note that you will *not* receive updates about which items are missing from your file. It will be your responsibility to contact the Mathematical Sciences department office to confirm that all required items have arrived.
Tuition note: The MSMME Program is approved under the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP), which allows teachers from Western states to pay resident tuition. The participating states are Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. If you are from one of these states, please include a request for "WICHE/WRGP status" in your file (this can be a brief memo naming your state of residence and requesting in-state tuition under the WICHE/WRGP program).
