Master of Science in Mathematics -
Mathematics Education Option
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
How much will it cost? Fees are
approved by the Montana Board of Regents of Higher Education and may
change. Fees for resident and non-resident graduate students can be
found in the Fee Schedule. Some
residents who live in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah,
Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, Washington,
Alaska, and Hawaii may be eligible for a waiver allowing them to
receive resident rates through the Western Regional Graduate Program.
Waivers are only available to students fully admitted to the MSMME
program. Qualified individuals must include with their
application a letter stipulating that they are a legal resident of one
of the above states and wish to be considered for Western Regional
Gradaute (WICHE) status. For more infomation, contact the Department
of Mathematical Sciences. Note that some non-resident participants
may be eligible for financial support from their school districts.
How long will it take? Because different students have
different responsibilities at work and home, not all students will
progress in the program at the same pace. It is expected that most
students will complete the degree over a 2-3 year period. At most 10
credit hours (3 on-line), if approved, may be attempted in a single
summer. In-service teachers are discouraged from taking more than one
online course each fall and spring.
Can I transfer courses and credit taken at another
institution? There are several guidelines governing
courses taken at MSU or another institution before being admitted into
a specific graduate program. These guidelines are found in the online
MSU College of Graduate Studies
Catalog. For further details you should contact the Divison of
Gradaute Education, 1-800-255-7962.
Should I take the GRE examination? No, GRE scores are
not required for admission into the MSMME program. However, the
GRE is required for toher graduate programs in teh Department of
Mathematical Sciences or if you plan to be on campus during the
academic year and are seeking a teaching assistantship.
Where will I live when I attend summer sessions? Campus
housing is available in the summer for individuals and for families.
Prices are very reasonable. Call Residence Life at 406-994-2661 for
more information. Please note: MSU has health insurnace and
immunization requirements that must be met prior to registration for
classes. Call 406-994-2311 for more information or see Residence Life.
What are the
admission requirements?
Admission decisions are made on an individual basis. Before admission
is granted, each application
is reviewed by the
appropriate departmental
faculty and the Division of
Graduate Education to
determine if the applicant's
academic preparation is
satisfactory. Following
department policy, all
applicants should have a B
(3.00 on 4.00 scale) average
or better for the last two
years of undergraduate or
graduate work. MSMME
applicants typically have
undergraduate degrees in
secondary mathematics
teaching, mathematics, or
related field with
significant coursework in
mathematics. Students
without this background
should have a minimum of one
year of calculus and one
semester of statistics
before applying to the
program. Two years of K-12
or college teaching
experience is also required.
How do I apply for admission into the program?
Prospective students should first complete a preliminary application
form. After the preliminary application is reviewed and accepted,
prospective students will be sent a graduate application which they
should complete and submit.
