Distance Courses

A significant portion of the courses leading to the MSMME degree are offered on a regular basis using distance learning technologies. Students use computers and internet connections (DSL recommended) to access classes electronically during the summer and the school year. Groups and/or individuals communicate with each other and with MSU faculty via the Web. Most schools and school libraries have Internet connections that would be ideal for the courses. However, students generally prefer the convenience of having Internet access at their homes.

Courses are offered via asynchronous, computer-mediated communication. On-line courses may use manuals, textbooks, problems, computer software, calculators, CBL data gathering devices, databases, Web sites, and other sources of information - but there are no lectures. Instructors and students often work through the material together, discussing topics and solving problems through a computer network that allows for private messages, group discussions, and sharing of work. Courses are structured, but not conducted in real time; therefore, students can access the class at times during the day or night that are most convenient to them.

MSU-Bozeman is a regional and national leader in offering online coursework for gradaute programs in mathematics and science. Science programs such as the National Teachers Enhancement Network and the MSU Masters of Science in Science Education provide science educators with innovative learning opportunities. The MSMME program, MSU's offering for mathematics educatios, has been in existence for over 20 years and has had a significant online presence since the year 2000. The MSMME faculty is experienced in designing and delivering high-quality online coursework and professional development for a variety of mathematics educator audiences.
