Doctoral Programs in Mathematical Education - Program Guidelines


This document supplements the Montana State University Graduate Catalog.

At Montana State University, there are two paths to a doctoral degree emphasizing mathematics education.

  • Path #1 is designed for candidates with research interests focused on university mathematics and mathematics education. This path leads to a Ph.D. in Mathematics specializing in Mathematics Education from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, College of Letters and Science. Graduates of this program generally seek employment in a university Mathematics Department.
  • Path #2 is designed for candidates with research interests focused on junior/senior high school mathematics teaching and teacher education. This path leads to an Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction, Secondary Education Emphasis with a Mathematics Minor from the Department of Education, College of Education, Health & Human Development. Graduates of this program generally seek employment in a university Education Department.
