PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Various faculty members in the Department of Mathematical Sciences are involved in ongoing projects through interdisciplinary research with other campus units. Such work has involved the departments of Animal and Range Science, Biology, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Earth Science, Ecology, Electrical Engineering, Health & Human Development, Land Resources and Environmental Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Microbiology, Nursing, Plant and Soil Science, and Plant Pathology, as well as the Agricultural Experiment Station, the Center for Computational Biology, the Center for Biofilm Engineering, the WAMI Medical Program, the Big Sky Institute (formerly Mountain Research Center), and the Solar Physics Group. Statistics faculty and graduate students, through the Statistical Consulting Services, provide additional contributions to the overall research effort of scientists on campus and throughout the region.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences hosts professional conferences and meetings and has an active speaker series and visitor program. Such opportunities provide students with exposure to many professionals in mathematics, statistics, education, and science. The department has recently hosted several conferences on approximation theory, control theory, dynamical systems, numerical analysis, and probability and statistics.

The department also collaborates with other mathematics and science departments in the state and region through conferences designed to upgrade the undergraduate mathematics curriculum. During the past three years, more than 200 mathematics teachers have received summer training in NSF and DOE summer institutes. In addition, conferences on graphing calculators, computers in the classroom and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards have been conducted by international leaders in mathematics education.

Students are encouraged to attend and participate in meetings of professional societies whenever possible. Funds are sometimes available to help defray the expenses of students presenting papers at meetings such as the Montana Academy of Science, the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics and/or the Montana Chapter of the American Statistical Association.
