Conclusions & Implications

The students also indicated that they greatly appreciated the use of the strategies.  The students not only performed better as indicated by test scores, but felt better about the process that provided them personal feedback on their learning.

As students interact more personally with the content, receive more specific feedback to refine and correct their understanding, they learn more mathematics and learn at a greater depth.  They can’t help but deepen their understanding when they make connections, ferret out all inconsistencies and holes in comprehension and synthesize their learning.  Secondly, the students will be better prepared to face the world.  Once they leave the shelter of our classrooms, they will be expected to write up their conclusions, verbally analyze situations, provide feedback and make recommendations based on their findings.  These strategies help them practice these skills.

Finally, although not explicitly student-centered, I believe an important result of these strategies is better information for me as the teacher.  As I read each student’s personal voice, I find insights into their learning styles, strengths and weaknesses, joys and struggles.  At the end of the hour, I know which students have grasped the material, which need additional help, the specific types of errors made and what needs to be re-taught.  My next lessons are better focused to meet the needs of my students and they know that I have heard them and am invested in their learning.  My daddy used to say “If the student hasn’t learned, the teacher hasn’t taught.”  I must agree; it is my job to provide lessons for my students that will offer every opportunity to enable their success.  The feedback I receive from them through learning logs and white board work provides me the tools I need to do just that as we work together toward the goal of mathematical achievement.
