Individual White Board Practice

In order to obtain immediate feedback of concept acquisition, I give each student an individual white board (11” by 17”), ask the class to complete a problem and then display it for me to evaluate.  I am immediately able to assess my students' level of understanding and to provide feedback.  She may need only to fix a computation error or may indicate to me that she doesn’t know where to start.  Using the individual white boards makes it possible and even mandatory for every student to participate.  This process allows me to provide the student immediate feedback and to assess individual understanding and the comprehension level of the class as a whole.  Their responses make it possible for me to immediately assess whether I should re-teach or may build new content onto this secure foundation.

These two strategies will increase student participation and improve the level of personal feedback on their work.  Through them no child is left unheard and un-assessed until the end of the unit.  Students may demonstrate and refine their work on a daily basis.
