Number Sense Activities

Looking for ideas to enhance number sense?  The links below contain descriptions of number sense activities used or planned over the duration of this capstone project.  The grades listed are where the activities were tested.  Most of the activities are adaptable to different levels.

 

Math K-2

Build an abacus--developing place value and reinforcing “to 10” facts  (plan only--not yet tested)

 

Math 3 & 4

Dot cards--verifying number facts

Get to 1000!--mental addition game

Show me 48--understanding factors with an area model

 

Math 4

You mean I don’t HAVE TO borrow?--subtracting from front to back

How many laps make a mile?--Performance task exploring estimation, measurement, and the relationship between addition & multiplication

 

Math 4-9

Dice and card games--number fact reinforcement ideas that include number sense principles

Math Facts “Gameboy”--TI programs instead of flash cards

 

Math 5

Don’t sweat long division! --the repeated subtraction algorithm

How many dog pens?--Performance task using grid paper models to explore factors, multiples, prime, composite, area, perimeter, dimensions, rectangle, square and consumer concepts  (plan only--not yet tested)

 

Math 7

Mental math--cultivating a habit

Let’s Get Close--relative magnitude and comparing fractions game

Counting stars and circles--understanding when to use common denominators

Cutting uncut pans of brownies--Understanding the traditional algorithm for regrouping when subtracting mixed numbers

 

Math 8

Warm Up puzzles--going beyond trial & error with number sense
