Using Multiple Intelligence
Activities
to
Introduce Limits
![]()
I have taught AP Calculus at Billings Senior High for
the past eight years. During that time I have made a lot of progress in
the way that I present most concepts to my students. The one unit that I
feel is still the weakest (based on past student performances) is the one on
limits. Even though I have tried to improve the methods I use to
introduce the topic of limits, the students continue to have problems
understanding the both the concept itself and finding limits under various
conditions.
Approximately five years ago, I took a correspondance course on multiple
intelligence applications to education. At that time, there were very few
activities for high school math students included in the course materials.
As my class project I wrote a mini-unit on solids of revolution that continues
to be extremely popular with my classes.
For my capstone project, I decided to do research to see what is new in the
area of multiple intelligences education. I also wanted to see if math activities
had been developed for secondary or higher ed students. I then intended
to use the current research to develop a multiple intelligence unit on limits
in hopes that my students would better understand them.
