Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

How much will it cost? Fees are approved by the Montana Board of Regents of Higher Education and may change. Fees for resident and non-resident graduate students can be found in the Fee Schedule. Non-residents who live in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii may be eligible for a waiver allowing them to receive resident rates through the Western Regional Graduate Program. Waivers are only available to students fully admitted in the MSMME program.  Qualified individuals must include with their application a letter stipulating that they are a legal resident of one of the above states and wish to be considered for Western Regional Graduate (WICHE) status.  For more information, contact the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Note that some non-resident participants may be eligible for financial support from their school districts.

How long will it take? Because different students have different responsibilities at work and home, not all students will progress in the program at the same pace. It is expected that most students will complete the degree over a 2-3 year period. At most 10 credit hours, if approved, should be attempted in a single summer.

Can I transfer courses and credit taken at another institution? There are several guidelines governing use of courses taken at MSU or another institution before being admitted into a specific graduate program. These guidelines are found in the online MSU College of Graduate Studies Catalog. For further details you should contact the College of Graduate Studies, 1-800-255-7962.

Should I take the GRE examination? Yes, you should take the GRE general test and be able to provide verbal, quantitative and analytical scores. We do not require scores for subject tests. The Mathematics Education Program requires a score of 480 in the verbal portion of the GRE. Information about the GRE dates and places is available at 1-800-GRE-CALL. Also, see http://www.gre.org.

Where will I live when I attend summer sessions? Campus housing is available in the summer for individuals and for families. Prices are very reasonable. Call Residence Life at 406-994-2661 for more information. Please note: MSU has health insurance and immunization requirements that must be met prior to registration for classes. Call (406) 994-2311 for more information or see Residence Life.

How do I apply for admission into the program? Prospective students should first complete a preliminary application form. After the preliminary application is reviewed and accepted, prospective students will be sent a graduate application which they should complete and submit. For more information see How To Apply on the College of Graduate Studies homepage..

How do I learn more? See the webpage for the MSU College of Graduate Studies. This describes all requirements for obtaining graduate degrees at MSU.
