Highlights

Equalizing access for all teachers is important for MSU and important for Montana, where distance traditionally has inhibited place-bound faculty in rural areas from pursuing advanced degrees.

The MS Option in Mathematics Education is designed to serve teachers-in-service where they live and work.

  • Most of the program can be completed off campus.  At least two online courses are offered each semester, both academic year and summer.
  • The program was identified as unique and of high quality by the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP).  It was added to the WRPG in 2000.  This allows students from 14 western states to complete the program at very affordable residential rates.
  • Up to nine semester hours of graduate credits earned at another institution, if approved, can be transferred into the program.
  • All of the on-campus summer courses are offered in a special three-week institute format, with follow-up individualized project components.
  • On-campus summer courses are offered on a Monday to Thursday basis allowing time on the weekends for family visits or even excursions into Montana’s great outdoors.
  • The staff at the Burn's Telecommunication Center are regularly available to provide expert advice and assistance to students enrolled in distance learning courses. The assistance ranges from helping teachers get "on-line," and troubleshooting any problems with the distance delivery software, to providing information on distance learning opportunities.
  • When registered for courses students have access to a growing collection of on-line journals and other on-line library resources through the MSU Renne Library.
  • Class size is kept to a maximum of 20 students. Numbers are usually in the 10-15 range making student-professor interactions friendly and productive.
  • Students who wish to include coursework in science education as a "supporting area" can count 9 credit hours of the MS program in mathematics education toward such an emphasis area. Currently a wide variety of graduate level science education courses are offered in the distance learning format. See the Master of Science in Science Education homepage for more information.
  • MSU’s mathematics education group is one of the largest mathematics education faculties in the Northwest. They are active at national and state levels and have a proven track record in providing state-of-the-art professional development opportunities for mathematics teachers
