Supervisor    Mark Pernarowski

Grading
Your final course percentage P will be based off four common hour exams and a section grade determined
   by your instructor:
               Date               Max points
   Midterm 1     M1        Tues, Feb. 7         100 (common exam)
   Midterm 2     M2        Tues, Mar. 7      100 (common exam)
   Midterm 3     M3        Mond, Apr. 10      100 (common exam)
   Final     F        Mond, May 1        100 (common/comprehensive)
   Webwork Homework     HW            50 (common)
Section Grade     S            50  (instructor dependent)
   Total            500

The section grade S is determined by your section instructor and will be based off a combination of quizzes
and/or homework assignments. Your instructor will communicate their policies for this.

Your final course percentage P is then determined by:

                  P  = (M1+M2+M3+F+HW+S) / 5

None of the exam, homework or section grades may be "dropped".
The course percentage will be converted to a letter grade using the following scale:

A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D F
90-100 87-89 84-86 80-83 77-79 74-76 70-73 67-69 60-66 0-59

Prerequisite

M171 noting University Competency Requirements  and Departmental Policies

Academic Misconduct

Cheating is a very serious matter. See the University Academic Misconduct code
Punishment for such violations will be swift and harsh.
You may not use notes, cell phones or any other electronic device while taking an exam.

Tutoring/MLC

Your instructor will let you know what their office hours are for extra help.
The Math Learning Center (MLC - Wil 1-112) also provides free tutoring during the week.
Capable tutors (including current M172 instructors) are available according to the following schedule

Rob Malo will hold M172 pre-exam review sessions on the following schedule:

WeBWork

Is an online homework system managed by the Mathematical Association of America. Your username is your netID username and the initial password is your GID number (with the dash).  WeBWork assignments  will be periodically added to the site. The assignments are automatically graded and collectively account for 10% of your overall grade. Two important links:

          Webwork login
   Webwork syntax help page
   Webwork Assignment Due Dates

WeBWork assignments will have equal weight when counted towards your overall grade.

Videos

Video tutorials for each textbook section covered are posted below under the "Media" column of the Homework section.  Hopefully many of you will find them helpful.

Exam Policies
  • Exam content/summary will be announced in class and posted below.
  • Common hour exams are closed book, no notes and no electronic devices.
  • The final exam is comprehensive but will have limited scope. The precise contents will be listed later in the semester.
  • Policies regarding quizzes and/or homework forming your section grade will be communicated to you by your instructor.
  • Class attendance on common exam days is not required.

Exam Dates

Exam dates, times and locations are listed below by section number. Some sections will be sharing the same room for certain exams. In those situations it does not matter where you sit but completed exams will be collected by section number. Know your section number!

 Homework

 Ungraded portion of homework

Below is a list additional homework problems from the textbook. Some are very similar to Webwork problems. More importantly, they are VERY indicative of exam questions. Though they are not graded it is very important you know the material.

Also note that videos and review materials are included under the Media column

A list of HW problems for the 2nd edition can be found here.

Supplementary Points of interest

There are many interesting and unusual things we don't have time to cover. Some of these will be listed in the table below with a brief description and link. In some cases these may be links to cool free software or web teaching aids. Enjoy!

Category Description Media
Surface
Area
Odd things can happen on infinite domains. Here's an example of a object with finite volume but infinite surface area!! The "ice cream cone" is commonly called Gabriels Horn. The calculations are nasty but undeniable. 1 PDF
Taylor
Polynomials
If any of you know symbollic manipulator program such as Maple or Mathematica, you'd know that tedious Taylor Polynomial caculations are easy. Here's sample Maple code illustrating this.   MAPLE CODE
  Taylor Polynomials of e^x
Series If a series is conditionally convergent, you can sum it in a different order and make it converge to any number you wish!! Weird but true. 1 PDF
Series There are some free sites that have cool web interface teaching aids for series. The future is coming but you should take such aids with a grain a salt. They can sometimes give misleading results. ......so you still need to know the material! 1 WEBSITE
