Susan Hinkins, Senior Statistician, National Opinion Research Center (NORC), was named Fellow of the American Statistical Association on August 10, 2004 during the annual awards ceremony at the Joint Statistical Meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Hinkins earned a Bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1971, a Master's degree at Montana State University in 1973, and a Doctorate at Montana State University in 1979. The official Fellow award citation reads as follows:

Susan M. Hinkins, Senior Statistician, NORC: For outstanding methodological, organizational, and applied contributions to the analysis of survey and administrative data in the federal statistical system, in the context of projects of great policy significance, and for service to the profession.

The designation of Fellow is a superlative honor in the Association and has signified an individual's outstanding service to and leardership in the field of statistical science for 87 years. Each year, 56 members of the Association were accorded the Fellows honor.
"These Fellows represent a wide spectrum from the ASA membership, and the breadth and depth of their contributions to education, industry, government, and basic research are truly remarkable," said Javier Rojo, Chair of the ASA Committee on Fellow. The other Committee members were Olkin Ingram, Richard F. Gunst, Donald Guthrie, Elizabeth M. Halloran, Daniel Kasprzyk, Nancy J. Kirkendall, James M. Landwehr, and Robert T. Smythe.

The American Statistical Association is a scientific and educational society founded in 1839, making it one of the oldest professional societies in the United States. The ASA is a nonprofit organization and achieves its objectives by conducting meetings, producing publications devoted to statistical methodology and its applications, and making available information concerning the science of statistics and its contributions. It also cooperates with other organizations in the advancement of statistics, stimulates research, promotes high professional standards and integrity in the application of statistics, fosters education in statistics, and, in general, makes statistics of service to society.
