Montana Chapter of American Statistical Association

Minutes of the 2001 Annual Meeting

October 23, 2001

Montana Tech., Butte

The meeting was called to order by President Brian Steele

I. REPORTS

A. Sherry Heis outlined the minutes from last year's meeting.

B. Jon Graham gave the budget report.

C. Jon Graham gave the Chapter Representative's Report.

II. NEW TOPICS

  1. Lynda Steele mentioned that she and Susan Hinkins have tried to promote a Careers Day at Bozeman high school and there was no interest.

  2. Lynda suggested an amendment to the constitution to hold chapter meetings once a year.

  3. John Borkowski attended an organizational meeting of the Montana Chapter for the American Society for Quality (ASQ). He was the only faculty to attend. If anyone else is interested in this group, contact John.

  4. Lynda attended a meeting on ethics. She discussed the guidelines as proposed by ASA to be stated on personal vita. The meeting also addressed careers for women.

III. OLD TOPICS

  1. Marty Hamilton was denied ASA Fellowship. He thanked everyone for their support, especially Jim Robison-Cox and Robert Boik for all their efforts with the nomination.

  2. Steve Cherry, Jim Robison-Cox and Susan Hinkins met in January to conduct an audit of chapter funds. No problems to report.

  3. Lynda Steele is still working on the chapter history. She will be working with Ken Tiahrt. She is searching for the `brown box' thought to contain relevant papers.

IV. ELECTIONS

  1. The current Vice-President (Chip Todd) becomes President for 2002.

  2. Marty Hamilton was nominated and unanimously approved for Vice-President.

  3. Sherry Heis and Jon Graham agreed to continue as secretary (Sherry) and treasurer (Jon).

  4. The chapter representative is supposed to serve a 3 year term. Jon Graham (current chapter representative) addressed concerns regarding this lengthy commitment. It was agreed that no one person should be expected to attend the annual ASA meetings for three consecutive years so this position will be reviewed each year. John Borkowski was nominated and unanimously approved as chapter representative for this year. Susan Hinkins will be the back-up should John find he is unable to attend the meeting next summer.
