Montana Chapter of American Statistical Association

Minutes of the 2002 Annual Meeting

September 24, 2002

Montana Tech., Butte

The meeting was called to order by President Chip Todd.

  1. REPORTS
    1. The minutes from last year's meeting were approved.
    2. Jon Graham gave the treasurer’s report.
      1. The Chapter is losing approximately $50 per year.
      2. Marty Hamilton commented on losing state members.
      3. Dave Patterson suggested holding meetings in Helena and invite state government speakers.
      4. There was agreement that that had already been tried.

    3. There was no Chapter Representative report since John Borkowski was not able to attend the chapter rep meeting in New York last summer.

  2. NEW TOPICS
    1. Robert Boik made an announcement that Marty Hamilton was elected as an ASA fellow. Members congratulated Marty on this prestigious award with a round of applause.
    2. Marty thanked Jim Robison-Cox and Robert Boik for their efforts. He talked about the induction ceremony in New York last summer.
    3. At the induction ceremony, Marty Hamilton was seated next to the person in charge of making arrangements for CDC speakers to visit universities. The University Visiting Program from the National Center for Health Statistics, a subdivision of the Center for Disease Control, will provide a speaker for the chapter meeting next fall.
    4. The date for next year’s meeting will be Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at Montana Tech in Butte.
    5. George Gaines from Carroll College told members about a conversation he had at the meeting in New York with an Ohio chapter member. The Ohio chapter has had serious problems between chapter officers and other chapter members. They appointed an ombudsman and disputes have all but gone away. George Gaines suggested the Montana Chapter also appoint an ombudsman to avoid future problems. Members did not see an immediate need but agreed it could be an honorary type position until a need arises.
