Course description

MATH 221 - INTRODUCTION TO MATRIX THEORY
Prerequisite: Math 176 or Math 182.

Modeling and applications are stressed throughout. Topics used to solve and analyze these models are matrix algebra, systems of linear equations, determinants, vector algebra and geometry in Euclidean 3-space, eigenvalues, eigenvectors.

FALL 1998 SCHEDULE
TEXTBOOK: The manuscript Matrix Theory and Modeling will be used and copies may be purchased at Cards 'n Copies in the SUB basement.
SOFTWARE: We will use the software package Maple developed by the Symbolic Computation Group of Waterloo Maple Inc. There is a student version that can be purchased. We will use the computer lab in Wilson Hall 2-144 which consists of SUN Ultra Sparc I workstations. All of these computers have Maple installed.
LAB MANUALS: The manual Maple for Matrix Theory and Modeling is available for purchase at Cards 'n Copies in the SUB basement.
GRADING SYSTEM: The course grade will be based on 2 hourly exams worth 100 points each (one after Chapter 1 and one after Chapter 2), one final exam worth 100 points (on Chapter 3), and homework/project/quiz assignments totaling 200 points. All work counts, there will be no dropped grades. Thus the final course grade is determined as below.

Chapter 1 Exam, E1 = 100 points
Chapter 2 Exam, E2 = 100 points
Chapter 3 Exam, E3 = 100 points
Homework etc., HPQ = 200 points

             Total = 500 points
```
A grading scale of 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% is used. So an A is greater than or equal to 90% of 500 or 450-500 points, a B is 400-449 points, a C is 350-399 points, a D is 300-349 points, and less than 300 points is an F.

Deductions Your employer (me), has given you 2 sick days and 1 vacation day. After those days are used, each class day missed will result in a 2 point deduction from your total grade. Work due on a vacation day is to be turned in before vacation. Work to be done on a vacation day or work due or to be done on a sick day is to be turned in within two class days. All work not fitting these requirements (including work due or to be done on a day of absence after all vacation and sick days are used) will not be accepted. The deadline for all work is 10:00 a.m. on the due date.
We are on flex time at this company, so you do not need to clock in by 10:00 a.m. or clock out after 10:50 a.m. However, abuses of this policy must be justified or they will impact job evaluations (your final grade).
