Course description

MATH 221 - INTRODUCTION TO MATRIX THEORY
Prerequisite: Math 176 or Math 182.

Modeling and applications are stressed throughout. Topics used to solve and analyze these models are matrix algebra, systems of linear equations, determinants, vector algebra and geometry in Euclidean 3-space, eigenvalues, eigenvectors.

FALL 1999 SCHEDULE
TEXTBOOK: The manuscript Matrix Theory and Modeling will be used and copies may be purchased at Cards 'n Copies in the SUB basement.
SOFTWARE: We will use the software package Maple developed by the Symbolic Computation Group of Waterloo Maple Inc. We will use the computer lab in Wilson Hall 1-144 which consists of SUN Ultra Sparc I workstations. All of these computers have Maple installed.
LAB MANUALS: The manual Maple for Matrix Theory and Modeling is available for purchase at Cards 'n Copies in the SUB basement.
GRADING SYSTEM: The course grade will be based on 2 hourly exams worth 100 points each (one after Chapter 1 and one after Chapter 2), 2 computational exams worth 100 points each (one after Chapter 1 and one after Chapter 2), one final exam worth 200 points (on Chapter 3 including computational aspects), and homework/project/quiz assignments totaling 200 points.

A grading scale of 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% is used. So an A is greater than or equal to 90% of 800 or 720-800 points, a B is 640-719 points, a C is 560-639 points, a D is 480-559 points, and less than 480 points is an F.
