Geology Class
Introduction:
In
this activity the students will form groups and they will research a continent
and develop a volcanic and seismic overview that they will present to the
class.
Objectives:
Have
the students choose a group and then research the volcanic and seismic activity
The
students must then present in a 30-minute presentation to the class, and provide
a written report to be graded. (75%
oral , 25% written)
The students should look at size of
volcanoes, type of volcanoes, type of flows, size of earthquakes.
They
should also report and the effects these activities have on the population
(utilities, death toll, transportation, agriculture)
Develop
the student’s search skills
Internet
access (preferably a station for each
student)
Color
printer
Transparencies
(90
minute periods)
Day
1 Discuss the objectives with the
students. Have the students split into
groups of 6. Have the students choose a
region (a continent) and OK it. Make
sure only one group per region. Assign
dates on which they will have to give their oral reports (5 minutes). Give the due date for the report (2 days
from this first day). Circulate among
the students answering questions and keeping them on track.
Day
2 Circulate and answer questions they should be putting the final touches on
their presentations the last 20 minutes for the ones going the following day.
Day
3 Have the first three groups give their presentations each 30 minutes (Collect
the reports)
Day
4 Have the final three groups give their presentations each 30 minutes (Collect
the reports)
Technology
- this standard will be meet in the way
that the students will be using computers to locate the information for their
presentations
Communication
- the students will have to give a presentation in front of the class, which is
a very useful form of communication
Integration
- The integration would be in the science and English areas. They would be presenting a written report
and oral presentation.
Cooperative
Learning - this activity has the students working in groups of 6 and every
standard wants some type of cooperative learning
This
extension is for a geology class and only 10-12 graders may take this
class. I think this is an excellent
activity due to that it incorporates so many different activities. It integrates the computer, writing, and
communicating through speech. I gave
this activity to our geology teacher and he used this. I did some observations since it was during
my prep hour. I saw the students give
everyone an activity to do. They split
up inside the group 3 working on volcanoes and 3 working on earthquakes. This was a great cooperative activity. The downside I saw was that all 10th graders
were working with 10th graders. Next
time I would assign 2 from each grade if you could do this. The oral reports went great and the students
had such a great understanding of the regions they chose. They all learned the types of volcanoes,
types of flows, and the other aspect pertaining to seismic activity. A great activity.
