The Earth's Plates
You will need THREE maps for this activity. You teacher will
hand out the large maps to you. Here are smaller versions of those
maps:
MAP 1: The Earth's Plates
 |
The whole Earth ... all of the land and water ... sit on top
of very large sections called Plates. But these plates aren't
made out of plastic or glass. They are made out of rock! This
map shows the boundaries of the plates. You can see the boundaries
of a plate on the map, but you can't see them in real life; they are below
the oceans or under the ground. |
Map 2: The Volcanic areas of the Earth
 |
This map of the Earth shows the areas that have Volcanoes!
All of the darker colored areas are the ones where Volcanoes can be found. |
Map 3: The Earthquake areas of the Earth
 |
This map of the Earth shows the areas that have Earthquakes!
The earthquakes are shown as either colored dots, or a lot of red.
It doesn't show all of the earthquakes; just those that happened during
2 weeks. Do you know how many days that is? |
Directions: Take Map 1 (the Plates Map), and draw on that map the
Volcano areas and the Earthquake areas from Map 2 and Map
3. See if you can answer the following questions:
1) Do earthquakes occur in the same area as volcanoes?
2) Do earthquakes usually occur near plate boundaries?
3) Do volcanoes usually occur near plate boundaries?
