The population of Grand Forks, North Dakota, at the time of the flood
was approximately 52,000.
The population of East Grand Forks, Minnesota at the time of the flood
was approximately 9,000.
Since the flood, the population in both cities has decreased by about
3,000 people.

Only twenty seven homes (out of 2,500) in East Grand Forks were not damaged
in the flood.

Over 11,000 homes and businesses (of approximately 15,000) were damaged
in Grand Forks.

Grand Forks received a record 98.6 inches of snow, breaking a century-old
mark of 89.1 inches.

Farther south, Fargo North Dakota received a 117 inches of snow, breaking
the record by 28 inches.

Damage estimates were placed at approximately 1.5 billion dollars in the
greater Grand Forks area.

The Red River crested in Grand Forks at 54.11 feet, more than 26 feet above
flood stage.

Flood damaged appliances, furniture, and other materials removed in six
weeks from homes in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks and trucked to the
landfills totaled 112,000 tons - 224 million pounds - normally nine months
of garbage.

The peak flow of the Red River measured in Grand Forks was 137,000 cubic
feet - over one million gallons - per second.
