1997 Grand Forks flood photos

Downtown Grand Forks, North Dakota and East Grand Forks, Minnesota after dikes on both sides of the river could not hold out the tremendous amounts of water.
Another view of the Sorlie Bridge, one of the bridges that connects Grand Forks with East Grand Forks.  The bridges actually became a problem as the flood waters rose.  They became dams, holding back the water and debris rather than allowing it to flow out of the city.

A truck plows its way through the waters on a mostly waterlogged street.  Another view of the downtown area.
A view of the river channel and some flooded crop lands at Oslo, Minnesota, a small town located about 10 miles north of Grand Forks.  It's hard to see where the river ends and the farm land begins.

A local resident walks a dike checking for leaks.  Notice that the dike is quite a bit taller than he is.

Several houses were partially under water and could not be re-entered by their owners for almost one month.

Two views of the downtown area after the fire raged through the area.

Ironically, the water prevented fire fighters from reaching the area and putting out the fires.
