Grand Forks flood page #3

Some pictures taken after the floodwaters subsided.

These two photos show the destruction caused by the fires downtown.  Over one dozen buildings were destroyed by the fire.

These show the burnt ruins of what was called the security building.

This photo shows some of the trash hauled out of the downtown buildings as a result of the water damage. Anything touched by the water would either have to be scrubbed thoroughly or thrown away.   Some items, such as insulation, drywall, papers, soft cover chairs, ceiling tiles - the list is long - could not be cleaned well enough, so it must be thrown away.  Over 100 garbage trucks worked every day for well over a month hauling away the damaged materials.

It was estimated that 8 million pounds of garbage per day was hauled out of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks during that time.  When it is considered that there are less than 75,000 residents living in both communities, the amount seems even more staggering.
