1. Which general location in each of these three states
(Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana) seems to have the greatest precipitation?
The places with the greatest elevations.
2. Place the Plot Profile of precipitation transparency
over the Plot Profile of topography transparency (make sure it is for the
same location!). Answer these questions based on your observations:
a) Is there a relationship between precipitation
and elevation?
Yes there seems to be a general relationship.
b) If so, what is the relationship?
The precipitation usually increases with increasing
elevation.
c) What is the reason for the relationship if one
exists?
The moisture in the clouds condenses as it rises
over the mountainous areas. This causes the water particles to become too
large for the clouds to transport. The water falls to earth on the higher
elevations or just to the east of them.
3. What is the difference in elevation North to South along longitude
113º west in the state of Montana?
From a low of around 4000 feet to over 8000 feet.
4. What is the difference in precipitation along the same line?
High of 80 inches per year to a low of 18 inches per year
5. Why do you think this difference of precipitation exists?
Changes in elevation
6. Generally, in the western states you looked at, the greater
the _________ the greater the precipitation.
Elevation
7. What explanation can you think of where precipitation
does not increase with increasing elevation?
A "rain shadow" effect where the moisture has already
been deposited before it reaches that particular high relief area.
8. Can you tell from the precipitation maps, the topographic
maps, and the plot profiles which general direction precipitation comes
from in these three western states?
From the west and southwest
9. Does the model of increasing precipitation with increasing
elevation hold true for the entire United States?
No the midwest and south and east coast are affected
by weather coming from the adjecent water bodies.
10. What factors do you think influence precipitation most in
the southeast United States?
The Gulf of Mexico
1. Which is listed first on the site: to determine the
distance, longitude or latitude?
Latitude
2. How do you make marks on the map of points that you
have found the distances between?
Click on "see these points"
3. How do you keep the image from being enlarged each time
you click on it?
Click on "no enlargement on selection"
