Applied Mathematics, Second Edition, by J. David Logan,
published by Wiley.
Course Outline:
Chapter 4. Partial Differential Equation Models.
Chapter 5. Integral Equations and Green's Functions.
Chapter 6. Wave Phenomena in Continuous Systems.
Grading:
HW & Projects --- 40%
Midterm Exam --- 30%
Final Exam ----- 30%
The final exam is scheduled for 4:00-5:50 pm, Thursday, May 6,
2004. Students are strongly encouraged to work together on
homework assignments. Late homework will be accepted only
with the advanced permission of the instructor.
Homework Assignment 1: Due Wednesday, Jan. 28.
Exercises 1.3ac, 1.4bd on p. 184.
Prove the divergence theorem on the unit square in 2-D.
Classify the PDE div( kappa grad u) = 0, where kappa is a
positive constant.
Prove that the classification after eqn (3) on p. 182 is
equivalent to the classification given in class.
Challenge Problem. Use complex variables techniques to compute
the inverse Laplace transform of exp(-sqrt(s))/s. Note that exp(-sqrt(s))
is not analytic.
The midterm exam is scheduled for Wednesday, March 10. Monday,
March 8 (and maybe part of Friday, March 5) will be set aside for
review. The exam will be open book, open notes.
