Abstract:  Sometimes it is possible to discover nontrivial solutions to certain equations by carefully analyzing trivial ones. Bifurcation theory provides a robust toolbox to do this, combining methods from Analysis, Topology, and Dynamical Systems. After a general and elementary introduction to the subject, I will show how it can be used in Differential Geometry, namely to find new examples of minimal 2-spheres inside 3-dimensional ellipsoids of revolution.
