Please note: The information you enter in this survey is not saved or shared with the department. The results are provided for your reference only and are intended to help you determine whether you meet the program’s admissions criteria.
Application Requirements
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (unofficial transcripts acceptable until admission is granted).
- 3 Letters of Recommendation.
- Complete list of all relevant coursework post Calculus II, including textbook titles, authors, and chapters covered.
- Personal Statement - Questions & Resume/CV
- Pay the $70 application fee, which cannot be waived, refunded, or deferred for any reason. Valid for no more than a year after initial payment and submission.
- An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale). Applicants with post-baccalaureate experience must have a graduate GPA of at least 3.00. Most admitted students have a GPA that exceeds this minimum.
- Note: GRE is NOT required NOR accepted
- Applicants who already hold, or will hold, a master’s degree before admission are not eligible to apply for a second master’s degree in the same program.
International Requirements

- TOEFL – 80 for admission, 93 for GTA eligibility
- IELTS – 6.5 for admission, 7 for GTA eligibility
- DUOLINGO – 120 for admission, 135 for GTA eligibility
- International transcripts must be translated and transcribed to US standards.
- Higher National Diplomas (HND): At this time, the HND is not accepted at Montana State University
- Admission is competitive, it is unlikely that an applicant with lower than a first
class degree will be admitted.
- Funding for MS and PhD programs is highly competitive. Without distinction as a “top student” and first-class honors, consideration for funding is unlikely

For external applicants who are not from MSU, the number of available GTA positions in each cycle is approximately 5% of total applications. As a result, although many applicants are qualified, and even very strong, only the top candidates are being considered for funding.
