The following information will be given.

You are responsible for all prerequisite information, this is a partial list.

The exam is written to take about 55 minutes.  You will have 110 minutes to complete the exam.

The exam covers Sections 4.1 - 4.7  Expectations from each section are listed below.

  • 4.1 - Understand the relationship between solutions, linear independence/dependence, and the Wronskian.  Know the definition of the Wronskian.  Understand the meaning of a fundamental solution set and/or a general solution.
  • 4.2 - We will return to this topic in greater detail later, nothing explicit from this section on the exam.
  • 4.3 - Know how to find solutions to homogeneous constant coefficient equations.
  • 4.4 - Understand the relation between language (overdamped, critically damped, underdamped, and undamped), the value of the discriminant, and the qualitatvive behavior of each.
  • 4.5 - MUCs - Know the forms and be able to do the algebra.  The worksheet and handouts should be treated as a supplement to the text and you will be responsible for that information.
  • 4.6 - Variation of Parameters - Know how to use the formulas.
  • Reduction of Order - Know how to use the formula given on the worksheet on Monday.
  • 4.7 - Nothing explicit from this section.
